AfterShokz Aeropex – Who is it for?

If you are looking for a lightweight and comfortable headset that allows you to be aware of varying sounds in your environment, and to make and receive calls with clear audio quality. This protects you from undue soreness of the ear canals (as often common with earbuds) from prolonged use.

a man wearing the AfterShokz Aeropex AS800 headphone to demonstrate the open-ear design, with its awareness and comfort

Best for large and medium-sized head circumferences, may not fit comfortably with extra-large XXL-sized heads.

You can make use of this right out of the box, without the need for any elaborate setups. However, it is advised to charge it fully before first use.

For higher-tier audiophiles, this may not be a top-quality recommendation for you, even though the sound you’ll hear is good. You’ll find the bass sound to be lacking, for the ultimate all-around audio quality experience. You can check out the Bose Sport Open Earbuds.

If you’re looking for a well-tried out, bestselling bone conduction headphone, with a lot of positive reviews and feedback, and is a higher-end product in its category. It still carries a lot of buzz around it on social media these days, especially amongst hobbyist runners and hikers.

If you want to listen to a longer-lasting headset music experience on a single battery charge. And not have to frequently drop your headset to charge.

Our Rating: 4.5/5

This will give you a bone-conducting headphone that gives you all the features you need. Our rating is to cater to people who are looking to own an open-ear headphone, which is simple but elegant in design while delivering a distinct music listening experience. Then this is worth your time and money to check out.

Here are some of the main features most people have rated highly or poorly about the Aftershokz Aeropex:

Situational awareness

The open ear design keeps you connected and aware of your surroundings. A lot of people considered this when they made up their minds to buy the Aftershokz Aeropex.

For active people being keenly aware of their environment, as they move around is very important in order to avoid collisions and mishaps on the road or in the gym. You don’t have to lower the volume to hear someone talking to talking to you.

Neither do you need to be startled because someone just suddenly appeared beside you, as you would have been hearing them draw closer to you from a sizeable distance.

Wireless Headsets

Being a wireless headphone gives you the advantage of freely moving around, without any wires being of a hindrance.

As you don’t have to be bothered about clunky wires, interfering with your movements while exercising or relaxing.

a woman climbing a tall rock, wearing a red aeropex bone conduction headphone
AfterShokz Aeropex Wireless Headset – Won’t Easily Fall Off, even when Rock Climbing

Won’t fall out like earbuds

Earbuds sound great for the size. However, a huge problem you may have is when they suddenly fall off, especially when you’re paying the least attention to them.

As sudden movements may make them fall out of your ear, unto the floor or the road, or the garden bed, or the gaps between covered drainages.

The design of the aftershokz aeropex headset makes it easily attach firmly to the front of the ear, while slinging across the top of the ear, without blocking it.

Music sounds good until you crank up the sound. You’ll find the bass to be lacking and vibrates

You’ll find the sound it produces very pleasing and enjoyable at normal sound volumes. However, increasing the volume to its max will only hurt your listening experience, as the bass is not sufficiently transmitted across.

Even to the point of vibrating unnecessarily at peak volume. Safe to say, sticking to moderate volume levels is the best way to truly enjoy its rich sound experience.

Constant 30 seconds beep when the wireless connection is out of range

The wireless Bluetooth connection works well within a range of 10 meters. Once you’re actively connected and move out with the range of the device’s Bluetooth connection, beeping sounds are heard every 30 seconds.

This alerts you to the disconnection between the audio player and the headset. If you don’t fancy or dislike beeping sounds, staying away for too long before it automatically reconnects should be avoided.

As the beeps will not stop till its Bluetooth signal reconnects, which you may find rather annoying until it re-pairs or you switch it off.

Not the best fit for XXL (Extra Large) Head

If you have a medium or large head size you should find the Aeropex headset fitting comfortably around your head. The same may not be true for people with extra-large head sizes.

Quite a significant number of people with extra-large XXL head sizes have found them to not fit appropriately to the shape and contours of their head. This makes this more suited to persons with medium to large head sizes.

For XXL extra-large head size you can check out the AfterShokz Air wireless bone conduction headset.

Verdict:

As we have unveiled above the main features you get with the Aftershokz Aeropex Headphone. We think you’ll prefer this headset for all it offers, from its simple open and over-the-ear lightweight design to a very decent sound delivery.

These features have been rated highly, giving you something that ticks all the boxes of what you need from a bone conduction headset.

This means you get an out of the box ready to use waterproof headphones, which will slot right into your daily exercise schedules, as you have probably envisioned it.

Not the best choice for Extra-large heads. This is best for persons with medium and large head sizes.

Aftershokz Aeropex Review:

Features List

  • Open-Ear Design Bone Conduction Technology
  • IP67 Waterproof (Not for swimming)
  • Lightweight + Comfortable
  • 8-Hour Battery Life

Open-Ear Design Bone Conduction Technology

It lets you listen to clear audio entertainment or music without blocking your hearing (the ear).

This is achieved by the direct transmission of sound waves into the inner ear (cochlear) bypassing the outer and middle ear.

This is done via the transducers, which help to convert audio signals to mechanical waves (of vibrational energy), in contact with the cheekbone (jaw bone). The sound is then transmitted directly, from the cheekbone to the inner ear.

The comfort the design brings along with a focus on safety, both indoors and outdoors.

This means that you get to avoid the discomfort of having external devices (e.g. earbuds and around the ear headphones) blocking the outer ear (canal).

This helps to avoid having ear sores, from the prolonged use of obstructive in-ear devices like earbuds.

As well as protecting you from having to then depend on around the ear headphones, as they compress on the external ear (pinnae or auricles).

It can be very dangerous to close your ears with either earbuds or around the ear headphones, especially when you’re outside on a busy lane or street. As you may be unable to tell when someone is walking up to you.

Worse still you may be aware of an oncoming vehicle, whose rider/driver may not be in full control of their vehicle.

With over-the-ear bone conduction, you get to enjoy your favorite music or listen to your favorite shows or speakers, while you are freely exercising outside.

Thus maintaining a balance between the ecstatic entertainment you are enjoying and the needed caution you’ll require to survive and thrive.

It is just as you may require, on our ever-busy road and highways, with the benefit of free and open ears.

There’s no need to miss a moment from the world around you, as you are always connected, while at the same time combining it with an enriching audio experience.

IP67 Waterproof (Not for swimming)

You won’t have to worry much if your device gets spilled with fluid or accidentally falls into freshwater of less than 1 meter or from heavy rainfall.

It is designed to be fully water-tight, preventing water or sweat from entering the device. It also has a moisture detection system, when you charge at its charging station that alerts you to the presence of possible moisture around the device.

This gives you the full confidence to go all out, and have maximum fun and entertainment while outdoors. When there’s a sudden rainfall, you can carry on till your destination. Do you sweat a lot? You should feel confident in enjoying your favorite playlist, in very hot weather. You can also have a shower with it or go paddleboarding and kayaking.

This also makes it easy to clean after a tedious workout session, as you can simply wipe it off with a dry piece of clothing.

Lightweight + Comfortable

A woman workout with a yoga exercise ball while listening to music via the AfterShokz Aeropex AS800 bone conduction headphones
In The Picture – Working out with a Yoga Exercise Ball,on a Yoga Mat

It is designed with a lightweight, titanium frame to weigh in at a total of 26 grams or 0.917 ounces.

The titanium frame as well as the over-the-ear design makes for a comfortable design that does not get in the way of your fitness or exercise regimes.

As the lightweight wrap-around loop design goes through the back of the head, then over the ear to rest on the cheekbone.

When compared to in-ear earbuds or on-ear headphones, which may bounce, slip and fall out. You get a snuggly fitting headset that stays put through any heavy-duty activity, right from the beginning to the end.

This also helps it fit in well with glasses and helmets, so you can have safe road trips while listening to music, wherever you go or ride.

8-Hour Battery Life

It delivers you longer battery life for extensive music, audiobooks, and extended call duration.

It comes with an 8-hour standard Lithium-ion battery life. This makes listening to audio for longer durations possible, especially from heavy usage.

However, the battery can last for way longer than 8 hours, depending on how you use it.

It takes an average of 2 – 6 hours to full battery charge with dedicated charging cables. For simple usage, you may find it lasting way more than 12 hours at the extreme.

You should find you are hard-pressed for time to want to charge it. It can be used for the better part of the day, whether you are at work or at play. As the battery last long enough till you need to charge it.

Customer Feedback

Below we showcase balanced feedback from actual customers. They have written down their reviews from their own personal experiences with the use of the Aftershokz Aeropex headset.
AfterShokz Aeropex - Open-Ear Bluetooth Bone Conduction Sport Headphones - Sweat Resistant Wireless Earphones for Workouts and Running - Built-in Mic - with Sport BeltWe sourced them from across the web.

Positive Feedback

I will start with advicing you not to buy the Trekz Air. These are more valuable and worth every extra cent you spend on them. Let me tell you what I found out from using the headphone.

  • I like that the battery typically lasts me for the better part of the day and worked well with playing video games.
  • The open ear design is highly functional. It allows me to hear ambient sounds as I listen very clearly to music or audio from games.
  • I like that the buttons are located in comfortable and easy to reach locations, such that I can easily access from tight angles while biking.
  • I found the headphone to be very comfortable, and I so often forget that I am still wearing it.
  • I am also impressed by the micropone, despite how small and how far away from my mouth it is, it did deliver very clear sounds.
  • I however found a huge drawback for me, sufficient enough to be a deal breaker. The listening bass is not good for bass heavy music or dubstep. All other sounds are crystal clear.

Overall, it is waterproof (you can shower with it), has clear sounds, an open ear design, connects seamlessly, longer battery, very comfortable and is also very lightweight.

I can fully recommend this as a headset with an open ear design that would not require to break the bank.

  • Nashan

Critical Feedback

I recently got these and I have been using this religiously for a while now.

I do not get to charge them as often has other people have described, may be as a result of my listening to audio at very low volumes, which consumes less energy.

The fit is comfortable. Even when i use them for long periods of time, they do not hurt my head or ears.

While I found the fit to be less comfortable when I lie down. I did improvise by wearing the headband under my chin away from my pillow, such that I can now lie down on my back (as a back sleeper).

I have a deep disregard for the very loud signal beeps, this is way worse when you use earplugs with your headphones.

Though the volume of the beeps do not increase, as I crank up or reduce the volume of the headset.

To avoid the loud beeps, I make typically use low volume levels and use them as a default, not to be changed to avoid the painful beeps.

If for any reason that I need to change the volume, especially when I make use of earplugs. I first remove the headset from my head, then I adjust the volume before putting them back on.

While I very much like every other thing about the headphones, I found the con to be a no-no for me.

Shokz OpenMove S661 Open-Ear Bluetooth Sport Headphones are a nice upgrade to the Trekz Titaniums.

Though they are entry-level bone conduction headphones, they are quite expensive for their buying price but are much cheaper compared to the Aeropex.

The OpenRun Pro’s bass is well boosted, to deliver fuller sounds and punchy bass.

Though, you will have to endure and ignore the increased vibrations, especially when playing music close to the highest volume.

More often than not, you may be too engrossed in your audio/music to care too much about the vibrations.

While being as comfortable and very lightweight, making wearing them on longer rides or runs much easier, as they hold a stable Bluetooth 5.1 connection.

Aftershokz Aeropex vs Shokz OpenComm
Aeropex headphone Shokz OpenComm C102

Shokz OpenComm C102 Bone Conduction Open-Ear Stereo Bluetooth Headset with Noise-Canceling Boom Microphone is designed as a communications-focused and driven headphone due to its flexible boom mic.

It is a good choice for a communication headphone in this period of ever-busy work-from-home or mobile workspaces, an era of near-endless Zoom or Video conferencing calls across several communities and locations.

The headset is not cheap compared to relatively similar headsets you can pick up today on the market, but it serves a unique purpose.

With its boom mic and DSP noise-canceling technology, it offers a much better means as a communications headset than the Aeropex.

They are better suited for joining on Zoom or video conferencing calls and leading tutorials or making video courses for YouTube or Udemy.

The headset itself is closer in design to the previous generations of Shokz models, with the addition of the boom mic.

The lithium-polymer battery gives you 16 hours of talk time and a standby charge for up to 14 days. It takes 60 minutes to fully charge, but the company says you can get two hours of talk time after only five minutes of quick charging.

Similar to the Aeropex, it uses the Bluetooth v5.0 connection, but can also use NFC pairing.

If you are considering picking up a wireless headphone for swimming, the OpenSwim makes for a good choice for swimming for long periods at the pool, or in the lake.

Current Bluetooth communication technology cannot send signals through water, so having to rely on stored MP3 files for listening to music underwater is the sensible option for swimming.

The OpenSwim’s MP3 audio is not only good for swimming, but also for those who prefer not to move around with multiple devices on a run or ride.

The audio files are stored on the headset, thus no need to use a Bluetooth connection to play music from your device.

So you can afford to leave your phone behind. The Shokz OpenSwim is an ideal choice for Tri-athletes due to the multiplex nature and environments of their sport.

The Aeropex with its IP67 rating is fully sweat, rain, and showerproof. However, the Aftershokz Aeropex is not designed for swimming.

Aftershokz Aeropex vs YouthWhisper Lite

AS800 headphone YouthWhisper Lite headphone

YouthWhisper Bone Conduction Headphones Bluetooth with Mic, Open-Ear Wireless Earbuds made of Titanium, and are Lightweight at 0.88 0unces for Running, Workout, Hiking, Driving, and Cycling.

They are splashproof with an IP54 rating, meaning you can go out with them in a light rain shower.

This is in contrast to the full waterproof rating of IP67 of the Aeropex.

However, with a battery performance of about 7 to 8 hours on a full charge and Bluetooth connectivity of v5.0, they can compete with the Aeropex for a long day’s use.

The YouthWhisper is comfortable on the head and is very lightweight too.

The YouthWisper Lite headphones are not lacking any decent features, and are also not entry-level bone conduction headphones.

The YouthWhisper Lite Bone Conduction Headphones are not budget-type or expensive headphones, but with a mid-range price point.

However, the quality of the YouthWhisper Lite’s microphone is not that great. Background noises are a common theme during calls. They are not the best for making phone or video calls.

The Aeropex is also rated IP67 for dust and waterproof. Lasts 8 hours on a single charge and has an open ear design to keep your ears open and free of discomfort.

There are 4 built-in beamforming microphones packaged with clear voice chat to improve voice clarity and active environmental noise canceling, to make your calls not only loud but also clear.

They use Bluetooth 5.0 and an external signal-boost antenna to optimize wireless connectivity with a range of about 33 feet (10 meters), as well as ACC, and aptX codecs. The Aeropex uses a similar wireless connection and range.

The T5 II earphones are not cheap, compared to the less expensive Sennheiser CX Plus True Wireless which offers ANC and aptX codec, or the more capable Sony WF-1000XM4 with the DSP, DSEE Extreme codecs, and Sony 360 Reality Audio.

The Klipsch T5 II True Wireless ANC earphones are premium in-ears headphones loaded feature-rich; these include built-in Bragi Moves, Dirac HD Sound technology, a companion app, and active noise canceling (ANC) protocol.

Though, the ANC’s performance is not so outstanding, as keeping out bass-range noise like loud bus engines, is well taken care of.

The ANC and noise isolation are still favorable to long-distance commuters to distract from the daily grind.

AfterShokz Aeropex vs Jabra Elite 75t
Aeropex open-ear sports headphones Jabra Elite 75t Earbuds – True Wireless Titanium Earbuds with Charging Case, Great sound with Active Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Earbuds and a Comfortable, Secure Fit, & Longer Battery Life

Jabra Elite 75t Earbuds – True Wireless Titanium Earbuds with Charging Case, Great sound with Active Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Earbuds and a Comfortable, Secure Fit, & Longer Battery Life

The Jabra Elite 75t wireless earbuds work well for making and receiving calls due to the enhanced 4-microphone call technology that filters out disruptive background noises around you

The Jabra Elite 75t provides a smaller, more comfortable secure fit design in your ears, compared to the Jabra Elite 65t.

The AfterShokz Aeropex offers a comfortable open ear style, with dual noise-canceling mics for improved voice clarity on calls.

The Elite 75t supports Bluetooth v5.0 connectivity and uses HSP v1.2, HFP v1.7, A2DP v1.3, AVRCP v1.6, and SPP v1.2 Bluetooth profiles.

It utilizes the Jabra 4th generation true wireless connection, to enhance the stability of your music, and or calls and thus ensure no audio dropouts or interruptions, without the use of easily tangled wires.

They are noise-canceling earbuds, which help to filter out the noise and let you focus on your favorite music or podcast. At first use, you will need to use the Sound plus app to activate Active Noise Canceling and allow switching between ANC and HearThrough from your earbud’s button.

The Jabra Elite 75t wireless Bluetooth earbuds, deliver up to 24 hours of battery life (even with ANC on) in total with the small-sized charging case.

The Aeropex headset also supports Bluetooth 5.o and can be used alongside earbuds for fuller audio performance, which can last about 8 hours on a single charge.

You may want to pick up the Elite 75t earphones if you want the Apple Airpods Pro-quality but do not want to pay a hefty price for it.

The Jabra Elite 75t earphones work with Android, iOS, and Windows, including support for AAC codec, which iPhone users want due to its compatibility with their iPhones.

Professionals on the go, commuting daily to and fro from home to work and want some everyday commuter earbuds. From their smaller size, HearThrough and isolation options, make them a great companion on commutes.

While the Elite 75t earphone series is a less lavish way to enjoy true wireless ANC earbuds, the Jabra Elite 85t earphones’ ANC is better, due to the use of a dedicated noise-canceling processor.

The headphone uses 6 of the 8 built-in mics to improve the call quality and keep out windy background noise. This makes your calls sound crystal clear, regardless of where you may be but not as clear as the Sony WH-1000x M3.

They are rated IPX4 for weather resistance and utilize a Nano-coating of the internal elements. They have no annoying wires connection, as these are True Bluetooth wireless headphones.

The AfterShokz Aeropex headphones last 8 hours per full charge, with no fast charging option. They have a dual-mic setup for clearer calls and noise-canceling during calls. They are very waterproof with an IP67 rating.

You can definitely use these comfortable, noise-canceling headphones to keep yourself occupied away from the world around you, especially on that bus with the loud stranger always complaining non-stop.

However, the headphones are not as powerful as the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 but are more affordable and they do work well.

The earbuds are not the most comfortable, however, they are almost impossible to shake out during rigorous exercise.

AfterShokz Aeropex vs JBL Live 660NC
The Aeropex showering wireless headphone JBL Live 660NC - Wireless Over-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones - Long Lasting Battery - Voice Assistant support

JBL Live 660NC – Wireless Over-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones with Long Lasting Battery and Voice Assistant support feature 40mm drivers and a unique sound signature with rich bass that can be identified in some of the most famous venues from around the world.

You get to keep away the noise and focus on your music with Adaptive Noise Cancelling, or you choose to hear your surroundings with Ambient Aware technology. While with TalkThru music is tuned down and speech is raised, so you can continue chatting with your headphones on.

Compared to the Aeropex, the Live 660NC are not as comfortable as they fit a bit too tightly over the head. The JBL Live 660NC headphone’s ANC though quite good, does not filter out a lot of the bus’s noise as you move around the street.

You can control the headphone from the JBL App, by using your voice or tapping on the earcup. From tasking your voice assistant to activating Noise Canceling, Ambient Aware, EQ and presets see the remaining battery life or turn off the headphone, as they stay in place as you jog in the park.

You get up to a maximum of 50 hours of playtime (or about 40 hours with the ANC and BT turned on), and also a quick charge feature. You can manage your calls from the buttons on the ear-cup and the mic technology provides for perfect stereo calls.

The AfterShokz Aeropex AS800 uses no app and works for 8 hours non-stop to support your daily audio needs as you exercise or work out.

Android 6.0 devices or higher is needed to fully access the Alexa features of the JBL Live 660NC wireless headphone. You should consider them if earbuds are not to your liking.

AfterShokz Aeropex vs JLab Audio GO Air POP
Stlylish Aeropex Side-Sleeping bone conduction headphone JLab Go Air Pop True Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds, with Dual Connect, are IPX4 Sweat Resistance - Bluetooth 5.1 Connectivity and 3 EQ Sound Optionss

JLab Go Air Pop True Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds, with Dual Connect, are IPX4 Sweat Resistance and offer Bluetooth 5.1 Connectivity and 3 EQ Sound Settings (JLab Signature, Balanced, and Bass Boost) deliver 8+ hours of playtime from each earbud, and 3 full extra charges from the charging case (32+ hours in total).

Use and return the buds to the case to recharge, and you can use the added USB cable to charge the case.

With Dual Connect, you can use one earbud alone or use them together. The built-in MEMS microphone in each bud helps to make calls clearer.

The case fits in most pockets and the earbuds are very small, about 15% smaller and 40% lighter with the compact case than most earbuds. You can freely try out the 3 tip sizes to get a comfortable in-ear fitting and create a flawless seal for crystal clear audio.

The comfortable, lightweight open-ear AfterShokz Aeropex does have a sleek silicone carrying bag case for storage, however, the charge is non-rechargeable. It utilizes a dual-microphone noise-canceling system for clearer calls.

Also control the volume and tracks, play/pause, answer calls, and activate your smart assistant with the touch control buttons, there are no accompanying apps.

Check out the JLab Audio GO Air POP True Wireless, if you want a more affordable earbud for running. Though the earbuds have a shorter battery life, compared to the Anker Soundcore Life Dot 2 Truly Wireless, they are a cheaper option for sports.

You can try on the Anker for longer total battery life, or choose the JLab cost is a big consideration for you, or prefer to have modifiable sound options.
