Our Rating: 4.0/5

You get a bone-conducting headphone that delivers on all the features you need. Our rating caters to people, who are looking forward to buying an open ear bone-conducting headphone.

Great for workouts, sweat resistant, easy to clean, and will be worth your time and money to check it out.

Here are some of the main features most people have rated highly or poorly about the Aftershokz Trekz Air:

Safe to Use & Easy to Find

You get to be aware of your surroundings and be able to enjoy your music collections, playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks when you go out for message delivery/errands, courier, walks, dog walking, jogging, hiking, or cycling.

At the gym, you are able to listen to your Instructors while working out, as it can be both lifesaving and confidence-boosting.

Allowing you to engage in small talks with people around you without having to frequently, by reducing and increasing the volume of having to pause and restart your immersive audio experience.

It is considerably larger in size, though quite light for its size than average-sized earbuds, making them rather difficult to easily misplace when compared to earbuds.

You also get alongside the package, some durable Reflective strips that stick well to your bikes, helmets, or shoes.

These are very visible from around 500 feet, more so at night. So that other road users are aware of your presence, from a sizeable distance before they get close to you.

Noisy Environment

If you are working in very loud areas at work, with strict requirements that don’t encourage the use of earbuds at work.

Even more true in places, where being able to communicate with someone closest to you at a moment’s notice, is of the utmost essence in ensuring the safety of persons and property.

It works well for aircraft mechanics, engineers, over very loud helicopters, or for speed racers in fast cars.

Its good speaker and noise-canceling microphone combination make audio an enjoyable experience.

Be it for listening to music, other audio and video experiences, or for making phone calls or participating in conference calls, this works well even in very noisy environments.

You should be able to use the Aftershokz Air Headset.

However, you may need to make slight adjustments in positioning (minor head tilt and placing your hand over the earpiece, will help you enjoy your calls and not irritate other participants on the call even in very noisy environments).

Simple and Comfortable Design

A simple and sleek design that is flexible and lightweight. It is not stiff like some other headphones and does not stick out from the back of your neck.

It is comfortable on the ears, unlike in-ear, or on-ear headphones, as they do not exert any pressure on the ears.

The button controls are fairly well easy to locate and operate, as you can determine each button as you adjust to the peculiar feel it button has.

With simple tap controls, you can crack up the volume, or tap to receive phone calls.

Firm Fitting for Most Head Sizes

The firm fitting design allows you to make full ranges of movement without being worried it will fall off.

When you bend forward or backward to stretch out or perform a deadlift at the gym.

Earbuds can typically fall out into difficult-to-access parts of machines, or be stepped upon by passersby, due to these frequent motions.

While most medium to large-head-sized persons will find it a perfect fit.

You may find it rather uncomfortable for individuals with very dense and or full hairs. As their hair size may displace the wrap-around headset.

Persons with smaller head sizes will find it too big, unfitting, and bothersome. For a much smaller alternative, you can check out the Aeropex mini.

Hearing Loss, Aids, and Glasses

In some forms of hearing loss, either bilateral or single ear that does not affect the inner ear, you can benefit from the use of the Aftershokz Air bone conduction headphone.

For outer ear infections, you can also benefit from it. The sound is delivered directly to the inner ear, by bypassing the ear canal.

As such it avoids worsening the ear infection and increasing irritation, as commonly seen observed in in-ear headsets.

It works well alongside hearing aids, especially behind-the-ear hearing aids, as the bone conduction transducer is placed on the cheekbone in front of the ear. Thus, it compliments your hearing aids.

It is also comfortable to wear along with your glasses, as they do not interfere with the stems of the glasses when placed in contact with your head.

a man gazing away as he does his regular workouts in the alley and listening to music from the aftershokz air as650 wireless bone conduction headphone

Light Bass

As is conventional wisdom with bone conduction headsets, this can be a sore point, especially with audiophiles.

The light bass can make bass-heavy music feel flat or rather not pleasing to hear.

Howbeit, the music you hear is nice if you are not too focused on the bass.

You can check out the Bose Sport Open Earbuds for a quite similar experience, but with much-rounded bass.

PROS AND CONS

Pros

  • Lightweight design
  • Open-ear design
  • Decent sound quality

Cons

  • Old Bluetooth 4.2 technology
  • Not fast charging adaptability
  • Light bass

Verdict

As we have informed you above about the main features you get with the Aftershokz Air AS650 Headphone. We think you’ll like the headset, from its open ear, comfortable design to its very decent sound offering.

These features have been well received and rated highly, meaning you should be getting a headset that meets most of what you want from a bone conduction headset.

It is a ready-to-use sweat-proof headphone, helping you stay connected and motivated all day long.

Not the best choice for small head-sized persons, and very full-haired individuals.

Features List

  • Wireless Bluetooth Connection with multipoint pairing
  • IP55 Water Resistant Rating
  • 6-Hour Battery Life
  • Lightweight + Comfortable

Wireless Bluetooth Connection with multipoint pairing

It comes installed with a wireless Bluetooth 4.2 connection, which let you connect to your services via Bluetooth mode.

As it is cordless, saving you the hassle and troubles of tangled wires rolling around your arms and hands obstructing your movement and rhythm during workout exercises.

Thus, you can avoid ill-fated and often tired fatal accidents, from loose wires entangling themselves within moving parts of machinery, either at work, at home, or at play.

You should be aware that its Bluetooth 4.2 connection is not the most recent on the market. However, it works well without any issues over a distance of 33 feet.

It also allows you the ease of connecting the Aftershokz Air headset to more than one Bluetooth-enabled device (2 devices) at a time. This is achieved through its Multipoint Pairing technology.

This allows you to switch simultaneously between one paired device and another. It gives you some DJ vibes like you run the dance floor with continuously changing music, though from 2 separate devices.

This lets the Trekz Air pair seamlessly with your iOS devices or Android Bluetooth-ready smartphones, and tablets, as well as your MacBook, PC computers, and laptops.

Although it is not well suited for gaming. You can try out the SteelSeries Arctis 7+ Gaming Headset for an amazing gaming experience.

IP55 Water Resistant Rating

The Air is built to the Rating Standard of IP55. This rating informs you that the device is water-resistant, but not waterproof.

So don’t go swimming or diving with it. (If you looking for a fully waterproof headset that you can use while in or underwater. Then, you should check out the Shokz OpenSwim/Xtrainerz).

This is achieved by a flexible plastic protective covering that seals the contents of the headsets within, thus protecting them from being easily invaded by water or most fluids.

This makes it very resistant to the effects of sweat, dust, and moisture. Thereby giving you the confidence to have fun and exercise during periods of rainfall, or go full throttle having intensive workout sessions at the gym nonstop.

After each use, you can clean up the device by wiping it with a clean, dry piece of clothing.

a beautiful lady gazing away as she does his regular workouts at a stadium, while holding a towel with both hands and listening to music from the aftershokz air as650 bone conduction headset

6-Hour Battery Life

This gives you 6 hours of non-stop wireless Bluetooth entertainment. With its standard gauge Lithium-ion battery, this gets full after about 2 hours of charging time.

This allows you to listen to audio or make phone calls for long periods of time at a stretch, before recharging.

With this, you can have more moments of fun and bliss, without unnecessarily being worried about your device’s battery giving up on you in between your workout session.

So you won’t have to be moving around everywhere carrying some bulky charger.

Lightweight + Comfortable

Its full wrap-around lightweight design lets it grip firmly on the cheekbone in front of the ear, while the Aftershokz Air weighs in at 30 grams.

This is achieved via its very light titanium frame and thin layered protective plastic covering.

This design allows the frame to rest along the top rim curvature of both ears and does not apply any undue pressure on the ears. It leaves you almost unaware of its presence, along with your ears as they feel just right at home there.

This comfort it provides lets you carry on with the rest of your activities, without having to be distracted by irritations from your ear from the use of devices like the in-ear and on-ear headphones.

Customer Feedback

Below we showcase balanced feedback from actual customers. They have written down their reviews from their own personal experiences with the use of the Aftershokz Trekz Air headset.
Aftershokz AS650SG headsetWe sourced them from across the web.

Positive Feedback

A friend on Reddit recommended the Trekz Air and I went and bought a pair with paying attention to any other reviews.

I am proud to say that they were the best headphones for running that I have ever used.

I later saw some negative reviews across the web and on youtube, I presume most of them are non-runners.

Some were expecting that the sound quality should be on par with similarly priced regular headphones/earbuds.

In my opinion, they are not making a fair assessment by comparing them together.

You will have to make do with some lower sound quality (most especially the bass) for an unmatched safety and comfort.

One thing most people are aware of when they start running with normal ear buds, is that after a while they can become irritable.

They begin to hurt inside your ears, and the move around a lot and sometime sslip out of your ears, needing you to push them back inside.

You would not experience those annoying feelings with these, because your ears are free.

They feel so paper weight on the head and they move around much, no matter how hard or for how long your run and sweat.

The back band that connects both sides of the headphone, is semi-rigid and free enough to not disturb your head or neck.

Some people I heard were complaining about it, as they would have prefered it to fit very tightly against their neck, but I beg to differ with them.

A cord bouncing or touching my skin while I am running, can be very ticklish, irritating and annoying.

Judging from the nature of the firm design of the headsets, one can clearly see that they were intentionally designed to prevent that from happening.

I want to believe that AfterShokz team would not shy away from that unique design choice in their future headphone models.

Another common complaint I saw were of the opinion that the design prevented them from using the headphones for sleeping on their backs, but I do know that these were not designed for that.

These were targeted to active people for activities like running, hiking, and or cycling. I would suggest to them to get other headphones meant for relaxing around the house.

Some other reviews I also saw were saying that their headphones failed and they had no warranty.

I strongly disagree because the packaging box also includes a stand alone warranty card, which states that they have a-two (2) year warranty and it includes a URL to visit to lodge a warranty claim if the need arises.

An additional reason why these are a great choice is because more and more races have banned headphones on account of safety issues.

They also added exemptions for the use of bone conducting headphones. If your racing community has a blanket ban on headphone and no exemptions, you should email them to demand for one.

Not only do I now hear race directions and the countdown timer at the starting line, I can also hear the spectators as they cheer me on.

Prior to these, I had to make a choice between listening to music or hearing the spectators, but now I am eagerly looking forward to listening to both!

Most people keep asking me about my running gears, I openly tell them. Before now, I have never bought or used any running gear that has made me a true believer in the product.

I now religiously tell everyone I can about these headphones. They are a great joy to own and use.

You need to experience them to truly understand. No words can fully describe the experience from using them.

If you are not fully sold to bone conduction headphones, you should look for a place which can allow you try them out, like your local running shop or race expo.

I fully stand by my review without mincing words. To all my fellow runners, you should find these to be the most comfortable pair of headphones you have ever raced in.

Critical Feedback

I just recently got these headphones and I was so happy with the sound experience as well as the open ear design.

I was however dissapointed because there was no skip back function on the headset.

I am an avid listener to music as well as audio books.

I have had several occasions were I would have loved to re-listen to the previous 15 or 30 seconds of the book again, due to being distracted or my finding a particularly part to be very interesting.

I just did not feel right to always have to bring out and unlock my phone, just to use the ‘skip back’ while I was riding on my bike, that for me would have been a deal breaker.

Frequently Asked Questions by Customers

Here are the most common frequently asked questions most people want answers to, before buying the Aftershokz Trekz Air bone conduction headset.

Can it pair with two devices?

Yes, you can pair up your Trekz Air with two (2) devices using Multipoint Pairing.

I wear hearing aids. Are these compatible with hearing aids?

Yes, they are compatible with most hearing aids.

The Trekz Air headphone model should be compatible with any device, which uses at a minimum a Bluetooth v3.1 technology or higher.

When you wear your hearing aids together with the headset, you will still be able to keep your ears open so that you can still hear the ambient sounds around me.

It does take some time to get used to them, but once you use them for a while, it becomes easier.

If I put these things on and put in some earplugs, will I still hear the music without interference?

Yes, as a matter of fact, the sounds you will hear, will get much louder and clearer too.

The Trekz headphones do come with a pair of earplugs, which helps to block out any background noise especially when you are traveling on an airplane.

a lady stretching

How many hours does it last on one charge?

You can expect to have a minimum of about six (6) hours of continuous music and calls on each full charge.

I have single ear deafness with some nerve damage. The other ear is perfect (had a hearing test) will this work for me?

Bone conduction headphones will benefit people with some forms of hearing challenges more than others. Speak with your E.N.T. doctor for further clarifications.

However, the headphones work best for people with damaged eardrums, but with intact hearing nerves. So long as the cochlea of the inner ear is functional, you can try using the headphones.

Would you be able to hear while riding a motorcycle with earplugs in?

Yes and No.

Yes, depending on how noisy the location you are riding your motorcycle is, and if the earplugs can filter out some noise.

No, if you use noise-proof earplugs, it may be rather unsafe to ride a motorcycle with earplugs on.

Can I use the headphones in a loud workshop with earplugs in?

Yes, you can use the headphones in your workshop (with very loud equipment), while you wear earplugs. They work great to help you listen to audiobooks and or podcasts, while the equipment is running.

However, the use of headphones in your workplace should be in compliance with the safety protocols of your workplace.

Can 2 people listen to the same music, if we pair and connect 2 Trekz Air to 1 device?

Yes, you can pair and connect two (2) Trekz Air AS650 headphones to one (1) device.

Can these be used while wearing a cycling helmet?

Yes, you can use them while a cycling helmet, as the speaker drivers, sit in front of your ears.

Most cycling helmet straps will go across this area, in front of your ears.

But if their strap is not too thick or tight enough to cover a significant portion of the skin around there or press on the drivers, you should have no problems wearing the headset.

They do work well with cross-country mountain biking. They sit well alongside the Giro, Bell, and Cannondale Helmets.

If you have previously cycled while wearing wired headphones for a number of years, then you may consider this a truly liberating experience.

The only downside you may find with using them is the wind noise blowing across your open ears as you ride across, long down hilly areas.

This may also drown out the music, but you may use earplugs to improve the quality of the audio.
