Our Rating: 4.0/5

This will give you a bone conducting headset that gives you all the features you need. Our rating is to cater to people who are looking to own open-ear headphones, with a simple yet elegant design, while delivering a distinct music listening experience, even underwater. Then this should be worth your time and money, you can check it out.

Here are some of the main features most people have rated highly or poorly about the Shokz OpenSwim (formerly Aftershokz Xtrainerz):

Audio Quality & Clarity

You can listen to all sorts of audio, from music to podcasts, recorded events, and conferences, even underwater. And they sound just as clear, beautiful, and with a deep sound underwater. As most people have shared their positive experiences of their use of it.

You can use the headset with earplugs, or not underwater, as some say they help to enrich their audio experience.

Sometimes voices of podcast presenters may not be very clear in water.

You may experience a distorted bass underwater if you’re familiar with its controls. As you can change to the swimming EQ setting that will help your sound experience in the water. A simple toggle to switch over to the ‘underwater mode’ helps to solve this.

Earbuds are supposed to fit tightly in your ear, thus preventing water from entering the ear. However, in reality, water does penetrate and slip through the seal created between the earbuds and the ear canal, totally blocking out the sound.

An advantage open ear headset holds over most underwater earbuds is that even without using earplugs, there’s a free exchange of water in and out of the ear.

Thus there’s no blockage of sounds since the audio sounds are being delivered directly to the inner ear bypassing the outer ear (no room for water trapping).

This will also protect against the development of swimmer’s ear infection, which may arise from trapped water in the ear behind a seeding ground for infections.

Volume

Using the headphone out of the water, some persons feel the volume to be lacking, wishing for a little more increase. Some feel it is just adequate. Others have noted to high volumes detract from their music experiences, so they would rather use it at moderate volumes.

Sometimes surrounding noise can be so excessive that it truly can drown out the audio being produced from the bone conduction headset. Stepping the volume down a step or two may let you adjust your hearing to it, thus improving the sound being delivered.

The headphone’s volume is noted to be even better in water. When you switch it over to Swimming Mode. The audio experience is so much different than on land (out of water).

Cleaning

It is completely waterproof and as such you can wash it underwater when you are done using it, after a hike, run, dance, or workout at the gym. And wipe it dry with a clean, dry piece of clothing. Rather very easy to maintain.

A-woman-wearing-OpenSwim-headphone-and-swimming-in-an-open-river-in-a-national-park

Controls

It can be tasking getting accustomed to the location and use of the controls at first use. After then it becomes a part of you.

Button functions are quite simple. They are all located on the right-hand side and are also easy to use.

The mode button lets you shuffle music, repeat tracks or playlist, and activate General/Swimming Mode to improve sound quality in water.

The randomize playback feature, randomizes it audio file system based on the date of creation of the file. This is dictated by the file dating system of the device, as it does not use the alphabetical system of file order.

Such that it may feel rather weird in the way it chooses to randomize your playlist. As some files get more frequently repeated than others, within the randomize function.

Other buttons serve as volume, as well as skip buttons.

You can rewind a track, by holding down the ‘volume down’ button, and to fast forward, hold down the ‘volume up’ button respectively.

PROS AND CONS

Pros

  • Sounds great even underwater
  • Very lightweight
  • MP3 music player

Cons

  • No Bluetooth/Wireless connectivity for out-of-water use
  • Audio file transfer system feels outdated
  • The back band may not fit well under your swim cap
  • If you do misplace the USB charging cradle, you’ll have to buy a replacement

Verdict

As we have lain bare earlier the main features that the Shokz Opwnswim (Xtrainerz) Headphone, delivers to you. We think you may choose this headset for all it offers, from its open ear and fully waterproof lightweight design to a decent audio performance.

These have been the most commented-upon features, which should give you much of what you need from a fully waterproof swimming bone conduction headset.

It is also ready to use out of the box, making your daily swimming practices, much more than just endurable, but pleasing as well.

It is not Bluetooth or FM enabled. Thus you’ll have to pre-download your songs unto it before use.

Shokz OpenSwim Review

Features List

  • Open-Ear Design
  • Internal Music Storage Only (Not Bluetooth Compatible)
  • IP68 Waterproof Rating
  • 8-Hour Battery Life
  • Comfortable With/Without Swim Cap

Open Ear

This lets you listen to music, and podcasts and also hear you’re your surroundings, while you are on a run, cycling ensuring your safety outside.

There is also the benefit of no risk of developing ear infections, as is often seen with avid swimmers using earbuds. Audio is not being conducted directly through the ear. Whittierhospital.com

As Dr. Julia Richards (of Novant Health Lakeside Pediatrics) recommends always maintain dry ears after each swim.

It lets you avoid having stagnant water trapped between your ear and earbuds.

You can also easily maintain dry ears during and after each run and workout.

Great headphone for tri-athlete. You can also easily maintain dry ears during and after each triathlon run or workout.

With the use of bone conduction technology, there’s less to worry about the right fitting size for your ears. You just need to place it on the cheekbone in front of your ears.

Wireless-MP3 & File Transfer

This can be a lifesaver for persons who do not like moving around with their phones or extra gadgets while exercising especially in warm or rainy weather.

Since you don’t need a cord, and with nothing to restrict your range of movement, not even a phone, you get to be free to roam and run, as free as the wind.

As a result, it being wireless, means you won’t have to deal with unnecessary winding or twisting cords getting in your way.

Loading it with songs and other audio files is quite simple and easy. However, you do need to use a Mac or PC to transfer the files unto your device with the cradle charger.

With just a click, dragging and dropping your selected audio files is all you need to do.

The software transfer interface for the headset appears rather out of tune with modern designs though. As they probably wanted a much-streamlined transfer interface.

Probably an app may be a more sensible choice in this digital age, but bearing in mind that the device has no wireless capabilities, this may not be a bad choice at all.

Thus, you won’t also have access to your popular streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Pandora, etc.

As you need to have purchased (or do a workaround) music files and download them (especially if you don’t already own some of your favorite music files), unto your Mac/PC before you can transfer them to your Xtrainerz headset.

You also do not get a Bluetooth connectivity function with it, because of some limitations with the usage of Bluetooth in water. Neither does it provide you with digital radio, so you do not have access to your favorite radio stations or programs on it.

It gives you space of about 4GB. This should store around 1000 songs and or short podcasts, ready to play when you need them.

IP68 Waterproof Rating

You don’t have to worry much because you can go swimming in water up to two (2) meters deep for up to two (2) hours.

It is designed to be fully waterproof, preventing water from the pool, heavy rainfall, or bodily sweat from entering the device.

This also makes it submersible so you can swim, run, cycle, paddleboarding, kayak or go training to defy your limits, more than ever before.

This makes cleaning it an easier task to do, regardless of the intensity of your workout session, as you can simply wipe it dry with a clean piece of clothing.

Having a longer and more exciting musical shower time is possible with it.

Come rainfall, sunshine, or winter, your waterproof headphone should help you through your day.

A-man-wearing-the-OpenSwim-headphone-and-lying-belly-down-on-a-surfboard-close-to-a-boat

Battery Life & Charging

You get 8 hours of battery life, for each full charge that lasts 2 hours.

When you turn it on there’s a useful feature that gives you an update on the quantity of battery power left, on turning it on.

Since it comes with its own unique (proprietary) charger, which covers part of the headphone within itself in order to charge it more efficiently.

While the concept of the charge is nice, the trouble is the charging process itself.

What happens when you misplace the only charger that works with such a device or you forgot it at a very distant location from where you currently are?

You will have to buy a replacement charger to continue enjoying the device.

Better still you should look to get a secondary replacement on hand, or at an easily accessible location in case the original gets missing or you can’t locate it for any number of reasons. As you may need it when you least expect it.

The charging cord some have observed to be rather short in length as they would prefer a longer cable.

The downside to charging the battery is that it does not come with an AI-in-built function that will prevent it from overcharging.

You are recommended not to exceed the 2 full hours of charging, before you remove it from the charger, after each complete drain of the battery.

QUICK TIP: Get a Digital Countdown Timer from Amazon or your nearest retail electronic store. You can then set the count down the time to 1 ½ hour or for exactly 2 hours or less. Depending on how much of the battery you had drained before recharging it.

Other than that the battery life lets you go on about your day and other activities, knowing you’ll probably be through with them before the battery runs out.

Comfort & Fit

This should fit well under your swim cap and not interfere with your swimming goggles. Mind you, this can also depend upon the size of your swim cap. Or at the least, the back strap may not be well covered by the cap. You should be aware not to force the backstrap into the cap, less the headphone does not sit comfortably well on your ears.

If you do intend to use them with a head warmer for outdoor activities, especially during winter, they should feel much more comfortable underneath the head warmer.

the openswim headphone will stay in place during intense physical workout out or as you swim

If your caps are a perfect fit for the headset, then you will not feel it moving about as you undergo your activities.

With or without a swim cap, swim goggles, power breather, or sunglasses, you should feel comfortable enough as it fits well. To the point of being unaware of its presence, due to its lightweight design, as it plays music.

The design also ensures it will not get in the way of your exercise regimen. So that it hardly moves about even a little, from where you placed it.

They neither slide nor fall off, even for powerful and fast swimmers.

However, persons with very poor short swim strokes do note that they once in a while come in contact with it. This is not a design flaw; it is more of a personal issue for the swimmer.

Quick Tip – We’ll strongly advise improving the swim techniques, probably with the help of a swimming instructor.

As you won’t get ear fatigue with this as common with earbuds, you could easily wear them for long periods at a time.

Customer Feedback

Below we showcase balanced feedback from actual customers. They have written down their reviews from their own personal experiences with the use of the Shokz OpenSwim headset.
shokz openswim headphone for swimmers and tri-athletesWe sourced them from across the web.

Positive Feedback

I like that they are easy to use even while swimming and the sound quality underwater is awesome. They fit in well, such that you may even forget that they are there.

The sound above water (for the “General” setting) is quite good, while, the sound under water (for the “Swim” setting) is very impressive. These are much better than most other swimming headphones that I have used.

They do sound even better under water, and even more when you use earplugs.

There are no wires, so no worry about being entangled with wires. Easy to add audio files to them (though there’s no bluetooth, as bluetooth and water don’t work well together).

I do swim regurlarly, going about a few swimming laps thrice (3ce) a week, and only need to charge the headphones just once a week. I should be able to go 2 straight weeks without needing to charge them.

Loading audio podcasts and songs from my iTunes, was as easy as me dragging and dropping them. The headphone controls are also simple to use and easy to find even when underwater, as the headset stays in place.

I love the headphones very much and do highly recommend them to all avid swimmers.

I only had only had one issue with them, the audio tracks seem to play in random fashion with no real pattern (regardless of normal or the shuffle option) and I often had trouble determining what track I was on.

While for regular music listening, this is not bothersome. However, for listening to multi-part podcast episodes that can give you some headache trying to figure out which is which.

It must be a software issue affecting my headphones though, cause others don’t seem to have or share similar complaints.

  • Raven

Critical Feedback

My headphone came without a fast forward or rewind function. That is just as critical as having the volume button. As I often need to skip things, or re-hear a particular segment or point made about 5 minutes ago on the podcast.

Whenever I go back swimming and want to continue listening to where I stopped the podcast(s) from the previous day’s swim, it often does not continue from where I stopped.

The fast forward/rewind function could surely help not hurt, like what I can expect from my old Sony player or Bluetooth Swimming headphone.

Although, other friends of mine had the fast forward and backwards function, working on their headphones. I could just never figure out why mine was not working.

Regardless, they are quite good. They are loud enoough for me, clear to hear, small in size, and sleek in design.
