Shokz OpenRun Mini – Our Rating: 4.6/5

Looking through some of the reviews of the Shokz OpenRun Mini Headphone.

While the reviewers’ responses have been openly positive towards the headphones.

We have been able to sort through the negative and positive reviews and give our own ratings from the varying reviews.

Here are some of the main features most people have rated highly or poorly about the Shokz OpenRun Mini:

Battery life

With about 8 hours of battery life, you should get to use them for the better part of your day.

Though, during usage, you may actually get a couple more hours of battery performance.

shokz openrun mini showing 8 hours of battery life, with quick charge, noise-canceling microphones, with wireless Bluetooth 5.1 support

Charging

The OpenRun Mini uses a magnetic charging cable, which works well but is not as easily as accessible as a USB-C charger.

Proprietary charging cables may look cool, but they’re too easy to lose or forget somewhere else.

Though it is advised you get replacement cables before you need them.

You also do get a quick charge feature with the headphone, letting quickly charge up your headphone for use, in a fast and safe way.

Comfort

After frequent use, most people have had no issues with the OpenRun Mini moving about while out for a run.

However, they did note that the rear headband similar to other bone-conduction headsets tends to stick out slightly at the back.

While it doesn’t pose much of an issue when you go out for a run.

Until, you wear them alongside a hoodie or a hat, whereby the headband can get in the way.

A tighter headband fit may be a much better consideration, regardless though it still is very comfortable to wear.

Sound quality

With its use of transducers rather than speakers to transfer sound waves straight to your inner ears across your cheekbones.

Its Premium Pitch 2.0+ does provide a decent bass and treble sound detailing, especially in the mid-ranges.

While you won’t get the fine detail and all-surround sound experience that you can expect from the best wireless headphones.

The OpenRun Mini can also deliver a more than decent musical experience; as they are not only designed for podcasts.

By using them with earplugs the sound quality can improve a notch better.

At the highest volume, people around you in a quiet room may also hear what you are listening to.

You will also experience some tickles from the increased vibrations, across your cheekbones.

Calls

You can also use the OpenRun for hands-free calls since there’s a mic built-in, and that convinced me to wear them for a day in my home office.

For working out

Exercising for long hours at a time can be dull, so listening to music via the OpenRun Mini can help lighten up your mood during exercise.

It also does not slip out and stays in place throughout your exercise routine.

You’ll get to focus more on your exercise goals.

A lot more people did get to exercise much more, be ultra-competitive, and increase their training regime.

By going out for runs, cycling, or hiking more times a week.

Some complained about the sticking out headband that sometimes interferes with their hair and headgear.

More common problems like Pony Tail Tangles and Cap Disruption.

Thankfully, the OpenRun Mini‘s shorter headband helps to reduce the chances of such hair and headgear issues.

Small Control Buttons and Voice Prompts

The OpenRun gives you a lot of audible voice prompts and reminders; for example ‘welcome to Shokz, battery low, connected!’

It is very useful considering the buttons on the headphone are few (needing a lot of multiple-presses to do some actions).

You will also notice that the buttons are rather of a smaller size too.

Shokz OpenRun Mini Review

Here’s a Shokz OpenRun Mini video review from Matt B Running.

Features & details

  • Shorter band size than OpenRun
  • Open-Ear Comfort
  • Safety & Connection
  • IP67 Waterproof Rated
  • 8 Hours of Music & Calls

Shorter band size than the standard OpenRun

The shokz openrun headphone neckband length compared to the standard openrun

The OpenRun Mini comes with a 0.83-inch or more than 2 cm shorter band size than the standard OpenRun.

This smaller band size makes them a more suitable choice for adults with smaller head sizes or children. As they will fit more comfortably and securely on their heads as they exercise.

The OpenRun mini is your better choice;

if the measurement of the back of your head, starting from the left to the right ear is 9.25 inches (or 23.5 cm) or less.

Open-Ear Comfort

The OpenRun Mini’s unique design utilizes a full titanium wraparound frame and wireless, open-ear featherweight fit.

This makes for a comfortable, earbud-free listening experience.

You can move around all day long with it in place on your head and easily forget it there.

This is more common when the music stops playing and you haven’t cued in another track yet.

That is how comfortable they are, you can be sure you’ll experience the same too.

It also comes with a branded Shokz headband to help you pack your hair in place during a run.

Letting you avoid the hair pushing against the back of the headphone band and displacing them.

Safety & Connection

It offers an open-ear design alongside a wireless hands-free stable Bluetooth v5.1 connection.

Which together help you stay aware of your surroundings and motivated through your workout sessions.

The headphone provides you with a decent audio experience while leaving your ears open to ambient sounds for improved safety during exercises.

IP67 Waterproof Rated

They are rated IP67 Waterproof. This means that they are fully sweating and waterproof for your workouts, fitness sessions, and or runs.

They make very good companions that can be there for you, during a heavy rain storm. Providing you with enough motivation to keep fit, even when the heavy sweat pours down. You will just need to wipe them dry after each use.

They also come with a Moisture detection alert system for safe charging. This helps to alert you to the presence of moisture on your device when charging. Protecting the headphone from being damaged by fluids.

Do note that they are not suitable for swimming, as the headphones are not Watertight enough for submersion in water.

8 Hours of Music & Calls

You do get about 8 Hours of Music and Call time. So you can have up to eight hours of continuous music playback, calls, and podcasts with the headphones.

You can exercise all day long, before needing to recharge the headphone. You can also use them for roughly a 2-hour daily exercise for about 4 days before recharging.

The OpenRun Mini can also deliver a 10-minute quick charge for about 1.5 hours of battery life. So that you won’t have to miss out on your tight training schedule

SHOKZ OPENRUN MINI CUSTOMER FEEDBACK

Below we showcase balanced feedback from actual customers. They have written down their reviews from their own personal experiences from their personal use of the Shokz OpenRun Mini headset, from across the web.
shokz openrun mini bone headphone

Positive Feedback

The Shokz OpenRun Mini has great sound quality and is a perfect fit for my smaller head, compared to my older Aftershokz.

The band stays out of the way of my hair and headgear, from the helmet for cycling or a running cap.

It doesn’t need to be charged frequently, though I wear them on my short daily work commute and when I go running.

I had some initial difficulty using them alongside my helmet, cap, and glasses, I mistakenly called my partner twice without knowing.

The call sound quality is very good and the microphone does filter out most background noises.

So even when I’m phoning from inside a car wash, the noise is well cut out.

After some rides, I got used to operating and using them while cycling or running with or without my headgear.

I used to go with Apple AirPods when I needed headphones for running & riding, but with the OpenRun Mini, I have stopped using the AirPods.

There is also the benefit, of no chance of me losing them like the AirPods.

It has a small band and easy-to-access controls.

It only weighs 26 grams, so light you may just forget you have them on.

I highly recommend the OpenRun.

Critical Feedback

While in certain scenarios the headphones do come in handy, for general purposes, they are not the best.

I like the high-quality finish of the design. However, they are not my first choice, for a quality music-listening experience.

I have plenty of good things to say but let’s get the bad stuff out of the way.

What I do not like

  • The sound quality is poor, with thin bass
  • It has some discomforting vibrations at higher volumes

What I like

  • Sturdy design
  • Easy to use
  • Excellent battery life
  • Very comfortable to wear for long periods at a time
  • The hands-free call quality is more than decent

Things to consider:

  • For a better fit get the mini
  • To keep things out of your ear and for general ear health
  • Open-Ear to listen to your surroundings as drive your car, ride your bike, etc
  • Stable and secure fit, and they will not fall off when you are working upside-down.
  • Uses a proprietary magnetic charger. It works well no question, but you only get one.
  • For general uses like, making phone calls, listening to audiobooks, podcasts and talks, it works great.
  • Not so great for listening to music and movies.
